Drysdale Soccer Club and FC Leopold honour club legend
DRYSDALE Soccer Club and FC Leopold have been in mourning after the sudden loss of DSC stalwart Andrew ‘Shearsy’ Shears.
Andrew was instrumental in the early years at FC Leopold as well as his huge involvement at Drysdale; son Ben Shears plays in the current FC Leopold team, while daughter Isabel Shears plays for Drysdale.
Somewhat fittingly in the women’s division 2 competition, the teams were due to meet at the weekend.
The match was played in tricky conditions on a wet muddy pitch and got underway after a minute’s silence to honour Andrew.
Both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect in what was to be a 10-goal thriller, finishing five goals apiece in a game that epitomised tough hard running at the ball and never giving up.
A spokesperson for the clubs said Shearsy will have been chuckling from on high at the game and would have been delighted with the result, effort and camaraderie across the teams.
Andrew passed away on June 22, surrounded by his loving family.
