SANTA has ditched his sled and arrived by fire truck to personally hear the whispered wishes from two Highton boys.

The bearded one was chaperoned by Highton CFA members who helped deliver some early gifts of Lego for nine-year-old George and five-year-old Fergus Maddrell, and was facilitated via the City of Greater Geelong’s Christmas competition.

“I love Christmas because we get to see children enjoying the celebrations with their families,” said deputy mayor Trent Sullivan.

The city is offering more weekly prizes including Christmas hampers and gift cards via its website, as well as a range of festivities across town such as the floating Christmas tree, projections on City Hall, or snapping a photo on the Giant Selfie Trail.

“Spending time with friends and family getting out to enjoy all the magical Christmas decorations and activities across our region helps to make this a wonderful time of the year,” the Cr Sullivan said.

“Christmas means different things for all of us, whether you plan to spend the special day on the beach at Ocean Grove, in the hills of Anakie, or in Norlane.”

After a tumultuous year for many the city is encouraging residents and visitors to look out for each other this season.

“No matter where you live, we can we all be kind to each other, support local businesses that have been doing it tough, and reach out to people in our community who may struggle at this time of year,” he said.

Christmas can be a difficult time for many families and individuals and support is available through Lifeline Australia on 13 11 14, Headspace Geelong on 03 5222 6690, and the Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre on 03 5222 4318.
