Easter fun blooms at Christian College

THE excitement at Christian College Geelong’s Drysdale campus was palpable on Friday last week, as the prep to grade six students showed off their carefully crafted Easter bonnets to their peers.

Each grade took turns parading around the school’s basketball court, showing off their Easter bonnet creations to their peers.

The custom-designed bonnets were as varied as their creators, with a joyful mix of bright colours, tassels, bunnies and fluffy yellow Easter chicks filling the school grounds.

The students were all smiles on Friday, as they danced and sang along to classic 80s anthems and celebrating the coming Easter holidays with their friends.

One student had managed to wrap their hat in flashing lights, others opted to repurpose sombreros, and several chose to decorate their bonnets with chocolate eggs, ensuring their safely stored treats would be on hand to commemorate a job well-done at the end of the day.

The Easter bonnets, designed by the students themselves, were as varied as their creators.

Head of campus Nicola Morrish said the annual event, which features a parade around the school’s basketball court – this year accompanied by some classic 80s anthems – was about celebrating “all the good things in life”.

“Easter is about life-giving and hope and we want our kids to feel that, particularly in a world where we don’t always see hope,” she said.

“All the kids have designed their own bonnet; we really tried hard to make sure mums and dads had hands off.

“It’s not a competition; it’s purely fun.”

For Christian College Geelong’s students, the Easter Bonnet Parade was just one of the many activities they enjoyed as part of an all-day “Easter extravaganza”, not least to mark the beginning of the Term 1 school holidays.

“We end the day with our whole campus Easter House Point Hunt and there’s choccies at the end,” Ms Morrish said.
