THE latest running of the Tim Gates Classic drew a combined field of more than 600 to Fairhaven’s beach on Sunday.

The five-kilometre fun run/walk had 567 competitors, while the 10-kilometre run had 82 competitors.

In the five-kilometre event, Dane Verwey was the first male runner home in a time of 16 minutes and 25 seconds, followed by Will Lewis and Fergus Orr. Lily Taylor was the best of the female runners with a time of 21 minutes and 33 seconds, followed by Lorraine Magasanik and Emma Warren.

In the 10-kilometre event, Michael Kernahan’s time of 33 minutes and 51 seconds put him in first place, followed by Damien Angus and Andre La Gerche. Sammy Gates had the fastest time of the female runners, 41 minutes and 31 seconds, followed by Nicole Avery and Emma Ross Edwards.

The community event organised by the Fairhaven SLSC raises funds for the Tim Gates Foundation, which supports young surf lifesavers to learn, further their skills, and compete in the surf and on the beach.
