THE Give Where You Live Foundation is calling on the Geelong community to help address the growing demand for food relief through its 2024 Feed Geelong Appeal.

Running from Monday, October 14 to Sunday, October 20, the Feed Geelong Appeal aims to make sure nobody in the community goes hungry.

Across the region, demand for food relief is continuing to increase significantly.

Data shows residents in the Geelong area are experiencing significantly higher levels of food insecurity compared to the Victorian average, with 14 per cent of Barwon residents having run out of food and being unable to afford more. *

Feed Geelong is an initiative of the Give Where You Live Foundation, working to address food insecurity in the G21 region. In 2023 the Feed Geelong Appeal raised more than $92,000 to support the local food relief sector.

Give Where You Live Foundation chief executive officer, Bill Mithen said the Feed Geelong Appeal raises vital funds to support food relief across the community.

“The increasing cost-of-living is affecting families in many ways, and more and more we’re seeing demand for food relief continue to increase.

“Access to healthy, fresh, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food is one of our most basic human rights.

“Unfortunately, however, right here in our community, there are many people who are struggling to put food on the table for their family each day.

“Now more than ever, we need the people of Geelong to come together to raise funds for the Feed Geelong Appeal, to help make sure nobody in our community goes hungry.”

The Foundation’s ‘Food for Thought’ research report released in 2023, showed 90 per cent of local food relief agencies have experienced service demand growth over the past year, with more than 34,293 meals being distributed in the community each week.

The community can get involved and support the Feed Geelong Appeal by making a donation or signing up to the Lunch Money Challenge.

Workplaces, schools, sports clubs and friendship groups are encouraged to sign up to the Lunch Money Challenge and donate what they would normally spend on lunch to the Feed Geelong Appeal.
