The guidelines aim to provide a clear direction on alfresco dining, making public areas more vibrant and ensuring safety.
Hospitality businesses and community members are encouraged to have their say with guidelines focusing on establishing a consistent and efficient approach to the application process, permit types, positioning, safety measures, design elements, operations and maintenance.
Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the council recognised the value of outdoor dining.
“Alfresco dining in central Geelong and across the region is a significant driver of the economy and helps to make public spaces more vibrant.
“Whether you’re a business owner, supplier, outdoor dining patron or from the broader community, I encourage you to have your say on these important guidelines.”
Under the guidelines, businesses could apply for a permit to ue public spaces, other than footpaths, considering factors such as safety, surrounding uses and public need.

Engagement from workshops, surveys with traders, emergency services, community members and an Accessibility Review have informed the guidelines. The Summer in the Laneways – Little Malop Street West Outdoor Dining Trial learnings were also incorporated into the guidelines.
As part of the trial, five businesses between Shorts Place and Denny’s Place temporarily expanded their outdoor dining between the property boundary to the edge of the Little Malop Street.
Cr Kontelj said the draft guidelines drew on best practice from other councils and cities.
“While the guidelines are based on best practice, it is still extremely important for businesses and community members to provide their valuable feedback.
“The draft guidelines aim to support the empowerment of local businesses, promote social inclusion and ensure public safety in the design and management of outdoor dining.”
Feedback is now open and will close on July 23.
