THE fight against motor neurone disease returns to Portarlington Golf Club next month for the second annual FightMND Charity Golf Day.

Hosted by local fundraising group Team Monica Hayes, the returning golf day fundraiser raised more than $4,000 in its inaugural year in 2023, all of which went to team’s fundraising efforts for Daniher’s Drive.

Team leader and member Geoff Fary is hopeful this year’s playing field can top that total on August 16.

“Our target this year is $20-25,000, but that means we’ll be closing in on $180,000 donated over the years for FightMND, all from this little community, which is a tremendous feat from all perspective,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to the company, mixing some great anecdotes and just having a great day.

“We couldn’t hold events like this without the support of the community and we hope it will continue for years to come.”

The day will begin with registrations opening from 8am ahead of a 9am shotgun start in the game style of a four-person Ambrose event.

As well as golf, guests will enjoy both breakfast and lunch, and will get to hear from Geelong Cats player and fellow golfer Mitch Duncan as the special guest speaker for this year’s event.

Team member Darren Hellmann said it was the sixth year the team was fundraising for Daniher’s Drive, which will this year take place from October 10-13 and pass through the Surf Coast town of Lorne.

“We’re looking forward to spending time with these guys again, raising some funds for a great course, and having good fun out in Country Victoria for a good game of golf,” Mr Hellmann said.

“It’s good cause and it’s good fun, we had 80 players last year and we’re looking like we might have a few more this time around, so it should be a great day.”

Team Monica Hayes will also host its fundraising dinner at Pier Front Pizzeria on September 4.

Early registration enquiries can be made by contacting Mr Hellman by either emailing [email protected] or phoning 0413 607 645.
