Foreshore trees saved in tweaked boat ramp plan

THE state government has reversed a decision to cut down cypress trees to extend a new car park at St Leonards boat ramp following community opposition to the plan.

State agency Better Boating Victoria (BBV) released final concept plans this month for the up to $20 million upgrade of the Bellarine boat launch after releasing a draft for community consultation late last year.

It had initially planned to remove seven established cypress trees from the St Leonards foreshore to make way for an expanded car park and traffic changes to improve access for boat trailers, but scrapped the idea in its latest design.

Community advocacy group Protect the Bellarine was among opponents to the plan in recent months, and its spokesperson Jenny Knox welcomed the news this week.

“We are extremely happy that the community’s voices for protecting the St Leonards foreshore and Cyprus trees were heard,” she said.

“Thanks to [Bellarine MP] Alison Marchant for listening to the community and acting on what she heard.”

The group said it would continue discussions with Bellarine Bayside on this and future projects to retain the foreshore’s value to the St Leonards community, including shade, history and town character.

The updated plans still include an extended T-section at the end of the jetty with lower landing aimed at improving access, plus installation of new wavescreens at the end and side of the structure.

BBV will also investigate lengthening the jetty as part of the project.

Better lighting, more tie-up options at the jetty and car park, extra ladders, soft fenders and provision for future all-abilities access are all part of the concept design.

An overflow car park at a greenfield site opposite the boat ramp will also remain.

Ms Marchant announced the changes last week as part of Minister for Planning and Outdoor Recreation Sonya Kilkenny’s visit to the region.

“Importantly, after listening to the community’s feedback regarding the foreshore, there are no plans to extend the existing carpark or remove any trees with the upgrade,” Ms Marchant said.

“I know the best outcomes occur when everyone works together and I’m excited to see this investment for Bellarine boaters.”

An upgrade to the St Leonards boat ramp was a significant election commitment from Ms Marchant in November last year, when she promised $20.5 million for the project. Finalisation of the concept plans means authorities can now progress with detailed designs before construction starts.

Almost 500 boaters submitted their views during consultation that started early last year, with wave protection, condition of the existing jetty, need for more berth and parking among their primary concerns.
