GAWS extends freeze on adoption fees
Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) has extended its Winter Fee Freeze program in the hope more animals can find their forever home.
The program was initially due to end on July 14, but due to popular demand, will carry through until Wednesday, July 31.
GAWS has had more than 125 animals adopted during the Winter Fee Freeze Appeal so far.
All dogs over six months are down from $360 to $49, puppies are now $199 down from $795, and cats over six months were $120 and are now $39.
GAWS chief executive officer Helen Cocks said the promotion had brought good results thus far.
“It’s been really positive, and will no doubt help us manage incoming animals with the busy season approaches.
“We want to make sure we can support people who need to surrender or who are going into aged care and more.
“Ultimately we want to get more animals out of the cold of winter and into long-term caring homes.”
Ms Cocks said animal numbers remained considerably higher than usual for this time of year.
“The winter months usually mean adoptions are up, but this year they have been really slow to this point.
“Animals are on site for longer, and it’s been making us pretty anxious and nervous, particularly with peak animal season coming up.
“The hope is people who have been thinking about adopting can be pulled over the line by these low prices.”
