A local sustainability organisation has confirmed its chief executive has stepped down after just over a year in the role.
Geelong Sustainability advised supporters via email on Tuesday that CEO Jane Spence had resigned.
“On behalf of the board, I would like to sincerely thank Jane for her dedication and contribution over the past 16 months, and we wish her all the very best for the future,” chair David Spear.
Spence began in the role in December 2024, bringing almost two decades of experience in climate action and environmental sustainability, including senior roles in local government.
No reason was given for
her departure.
“Jane’s departure was her decision, and we respect her privacy in terms of the specific reasons,” Spear said.
Geelong Sustainability has moved quickly to install interim leadership, appointing program coordinator Karina Donkers and operations coordinator Emilie Flynn as co-chief executives.
The pair are senior figures within the organisation and will lead operations while the board considers longer-term arrangements.
Donkers has previously led the organisation’s community campaign work, including its opposition to the proposed gas terminal in Corio Bay, while Flynn is known for her recent runs in council, state and federal elections.
She has been preselected as the Greens candidate for the seat of Geelong in this year’s state poll.
“Both bring deep experience, strong relationships and a shared commitment to our mission,” Spear said. “The board has full confidence in their leadership as we move into this next phase.”
He confirmed the organisation’s programs and services would continue as planned, with no disruptions.
“We remain focused on working alongside our community to accelerate a just transition to a net zero emissions future, and we’re excited about the impact we will continue to deliver together in the year ahead,” he said.
