Generosity wins the day at Torquay Cup

May 27, 2021 BY

The sun shone down on revellers and punters at the ninth annual running of the Surf Coast Times Torquay Cup in what proved to be a brilliant day at the track.

More than 300 people attended a luncheon at the Geelong Racing Club which raised $10,000 to support the work of Feed Me Surf Coast, a volunteer organisation which supplies fresh food to nourish the community that would otherwise be destined for landfill.

Murray Bingham hosted the event on Friday (May 21) where guests enjoyed a delicious three-course meal in the Silks Room while soaking up a picture-perfect view overlooking the track.

Times News Group managing director Warick Brown hailed the day a great success.

“It was our best yet thanks to the sponsors, the businesses who donated gifts for the major raffle and those who attended on the day,” Mr Brown said.

“A big thank you also to the generous community members who donated to our nominated charity even though they were not attending on the day.

“It was also great to work with Brooke Murphy and the team at Feed Me Surf Coast and learn more about the fantastic work they do.”

Geelong Racing Club chief executive Daniel Salter said it was wonderful to see the Silks Room filled with people enjoying a great day out at
the track.

The luncheon wrapped up with a performance by Piano Bar’s Joss Russell and a surprise appearance by drag queens Sam “Pashion” Bolton and Miss Jay.

Guests on the Feed Me Surf Coast table enjoyed the glorious trackside conditions.

The winner of the SCT Torquay Cup BM64 Handicap was Little Richie Turf, jockeyed by Carleen Hefel, with Bomber’s Kiss second and Royal Exit third.
