genU Training leading the way in mental health awareness in sport
genU Training is teaming up with Torquay Football & Netball Club (TFNC) next month to educate its players, coaches and officials on mental health.
With sporting clubs so often being the lifeblood of a town – a place where communities can band together through times of jubilation and hardship – having the knowledge of how to provide an open and supportive environment is crucial.
The stigma around mental health has been gradually broken down over the last decade; therefore it is increasingly important that you know the practical skills on how to support an individual on their path to mental health wellbeing.
TFNC are aware that a strong bond off the field can lead to greater success on it, and are confident of the benefits that Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training can provide.
genU Training’s MHFA course covers mental health in sport, raising awareness of depression and anxiety, and the effect of alcohol and drugs in sport.
The two-day program offers participants the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence to recognise common mental health problems, provide initial help, seek appropriate professional help, and respond in a crisis situation.
The course is aimed at players, club members, coaches, staff, officials, parents and community leaders.
