Great Scott offers a helping hand

Ocean Grove’s Peter Scott (pictured in front of his shed he just built), is heading off to Yogyakarta, Indonesia on October 6, where he will spend one week building homes for those less fortunate through the Habitat for Humanity Australia foundation.

FOR Ocean Grove’s Peter Scott, the opportunity to give back to those less fortunate was an easy decision and he is heading to Yogyakarta, Indonesia to help build homes.

Through not-for-profit organisation Habitat for Humanity Australia, Mr Scott will leave wife Tara and daughter Erin behind and join 11 other colleagues from Boral Cement to spend a week helping provide housing for low income families.

“Habitat for Humanity is a leading not-for-profit provider of housing for low income families in need. Habitat works in thousands of communities worldwide and has built and repaired over 800,000 homes,” Mr Scott said.

“As well as building homes, Habitat works in partnership with families to supply clean water and sanitation, livelihood training, health education to build long term sustainable communities.”

Mr Scott said he worked as a maintenance electrician for Boral Cement and responded to a company call out asking for volunteers.

“The company asks for volunteers each year to assist in fundraising and then they spend a week helping build houses for poor families in Yogyakarta, Indonesia,” he said.

“I know someone who took part in the program last year and he spoke highly of the deep satisfaction derived from helping less fortunate people than himself, and I thought I had the skillset to assist in this noble cause.”

Mr Scott said last year Boral Cement assisted Habitat for Humanity’s Rock the House campaign and helped build two houses in conjunction with local contractors and families.

“This is the first time I’ve done something like this. I’ll probably be involved in bricklaying, building, electrical works and any other tasks deemed necessary,” he said.

“I would definitely recommend that all people volunteer in any organisation of their choosing. If mmore people helped others in any way possible, it would be a much safer and friendlier world for our kids to grow up in.”
