THE Children’s Book Council of Victoria’s Children’s Book Week is fast approaching, with thousands of students looking forward to their next great page-turners.

As part of Book Week celebrations taking place across the region from August 17-23, Geelong Regional Library Corporation (GRLC) is leading the charge with special storytimes conducted by its fun and creative librarians, all ready to wear their best costumes for the occasion.

GRLC acting CEO Skye Wilson said Children’s Book Week is one of the corporation’s favourite weeks at the library.

“The theme this year is ‘Reading is Magic’, a theme we can get behind wholeheartedly,” Ms Wilson said.

“We encourage families to pop into their local library to check out what is going on this Book Week.

“We will have special storytimes featuring shortlisted books from the Children’s Book Council of Australia – see who your favourite library team member dresses up as this year, or you can celebrate the magic of reading by finding a favourite new book or author in our vast collections.

“And don’t forget, library memberships are free, and everyone is welcome. We even have some very special, limited edition fun children’s library cards for our littlest book lovers.”

Geelong Library librarians Naomi Ford, Kirstie Irwin and Julie Fryman all said Children’s Book Week is up there as a favourite week of the year, embracing the festivities by donning their finest outfit to bring Book Week to life.

“A book can take you anywhere, can’t it,” Ms Fryman said.

“They are magical in that way; books can make you feel things, they make you think, take you on a journey and make you see different perspectives of other people’s lives.

“Often they can be inspiring and make a child want to do something they never thought they could. Reading really is a wonderful thing.”
