Grove residents campaign for pedestrian crossings
OCEAN Grove residents have reignited a campaign calling for the City of Greater Geelong to install pedestrian crossings on Kingston Downs Drive.
Local Allason Lynch launched a petition on change.org four years ago, which was recently brought back into the spotlight by people concerned about pedestrian safety along the road.
“With the backing of local residents we’ve reignited the petition to get this much needed crossing done,” Ms Lynch said.
“The growth of all three local schools means more and more kids are risking their lives walking to and from school down Kingston Downs Drive.
“We could open 10 more roads in and out of the development but that won’t alleviate the safety issue for those walking to and from the local primary and secondary schools.”
Ms Lynch said both the developer and residents had repeatedly called for action to be taken in relation to their safety concerns.
“In 2009, the council advised a new crossing would be installed prior to the 2010 new school year.
“In 2015 we again contacted COGG when this crossing still had not been installed.
“Their response was that they did not believe there was enough of a need.
“In 2019, the need is still evident and still no action has been taken by COGG.
“It is only a matter of time before an accident takes the life of someone trying to make their way safely across this road.”
