Hands-on environmental program returns
APPLICATIONS are now open for the popular Nature Stewards program ahead of its return to Geelong, exploring the world of native plants and animals.
From August 31 until November 23, participants will explore geology, water systems, botany, climate and more as they gain hands-on experience and diverse skills to help protect the environment.
The 10-week program will take place at the Leopold Community Hub, with sessions running from 9.30am until 12.30pm.
Members will complete in-class learning as well as embarking on up to six field trips, exploring biodiversity hotspots across the municipality.
Cr Peter Murrihy, chair of the council’s Environment and Circular Economy portfolio, said the comprehensive course will educate the next generation of environmental volunteers.
“Greater Geelong’s natural environment is under pressure from a range of local challenges such as weeds, pest animals and climate change.
“You’ll meet like-minded people, discover more about nature and learn practical, hands-on skills through field excursions.”
Tailored for those with limited formal environmental education, Greater Geelong was the first regional Victorian municipality to offer the program.
Nature Stewards co-ordinator Dr Nicole Mertens said the course was a great way for local communities to connect.
“We hear a lot about the massive environmental challenges we face, but less about just how many people there are working hard to protect and restore nature in their communities.
“Along with learning more about the local environment, this course introduces you to some of the many ways you can make a difference.”
The annual program is delivered in partnership with the Victorian National Parks Association.
Applications are open until August 18 and although everybody is welcome to apply, preference will be given to City of Greater Geelong residents.
The course costs $140 ($70 concession) for Greater Geelong residents and $350 for non-residents ($90 concession).
