Fun and simple exercises for a happy spine

Dr Sharon Pedersen is writing the “Happy Spine, Happy Kids” book, which includes some exercises and nutrition tips.

AN INCREASING number of children presenting with spinal problems caused by technology use has inspired a Clifton Springs chiropractor to write a book.

Dr Sharon Pedersen is writing an ebook, Happy Spine, Happy Kids, which includes fun and simple exercises and nutrition tips for kids.

A chiropractor for 25 years, Dr Pedersen said the biggest change she had seen throughout her years was the increase of “tech neck” in children.

“They lose the healthy curve of their spine, because when they are slumped all the time they are growing crooked,” she said.
“It’s one of my greatest heartbreaks to see that.”

As a mum of three, Dr Pedersen said she understood the challenges technology and life brought to growing kids, and was halfway through writing the book.

“It’s fun and simple to keep them engaged, and it’s not a chore and the exercises don’t go for long,” she said. “I’ve put in some nutrition tips too, not just exercises, to make it more holistic.”

Dr Pedersen has also written an ebook for adults, Happy Spine – Self care of your spine and posture.

“It includes exercises to help improve posture and spinal mobility, and I’ve seen people’s postures change by doing the exercises, which take 30 minutes to get through, but you can break it down to 5-10 minutes a day,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) says it is important Australians are staying on top of their mobility and monitor any changes in their strength, balance and flexibility.

To help raise awareness of this common issue, the ACA has launched a new health initiative ‘Mobility Month’, to be held during March.

A recent survey found:

  • One in 10 Australians claim their pain hindered their ability to play with their children
  • One in 10 indicated impacts on intimate relationships, and
  • One in 20 realised their persistent pain resulted in increased friction with their partner.

Mobility Month encourages Australians to test their mobility with four simple exercises, go to chiro.org.au/mobility-month for more information.
