Have a bowl at the Heads
A WELL-KEPT bowling green, a new clubhouse set to be built and a thriving social community are just some of the reasons why Armstrong Creek residents are being urged to take up lawn bowling in Barwon Heads.
Barwon Heads Bowling Club considers itself a “small” club where each member is valued as much as the next, whether it’s engaging in a competitive game or just a friendly roll.
“We’re just a small local club in contrast to some of the bigger clubs across the region,” Bowls Club treasurer Bernie McCartney said.
“Given we are the closest club to areas like Warralily in Armstrong Creek, we encourage nearby residents in the Armstrong Creek region to come down and give the club a go.
“We have a great balance of social members and competitive bowlers and it’s a terrific place for new members to jump aboard and meet new people.”
Barwon Heads Bowling Club currently fields three pennant sides to compete against other local bowling clubs for those who seek more of a competitive flair, but being a “smaller” club, Barwon Heads has a high level of camaraderie among its more social members.
“Each Monday we get together for a social bowl at 12.30pm before heading into our current clubhouse for an afternoon tea and a couple of ales.
“Even if a new member has not played lawn bowls before, we are more than happy to spend time teaching the game.”
All 110 members of the Barwon Heads Bowling Club will also benefit from the construction of the club’s new pavilion.
Geelong council contributed $500,000 in October 2021 towards the Barwon Heads Bowls Club Pavilion redevelopment.
The announcement was made to match funding from the Commonwealth government with an additional $200,000 from the state government.
Construction of the new clubhouse is expected to be completed at some stage this year.
