Have your say on fishing in Victoria

VICTORIAN Fisheries Authority (VFA) is on the hunt for recreational fishers to join an advisory committee.

Nominations are open now for those interested on serving on the committee, providing advice on how to spend fishing license fees.

Eight recreational fishers plus an independent chairperson will make up the Recreational Fishing License Trust Advisory Committee, serving a three-year term.

The committee will also include 50 per cent representation by women.

VFA chief executive officer Travis Dowling said the committee brought together a diverse range of fishing knowledge and experience.

“These volunteers review and prioritise project submissions from fishing clubs, community groups, councils and government agencies.

“They do a great job and have proven that recreational fishers are passionate about protecting and growing Victoria’s fantastic fisheries.

“We are looking for grass roots fishers with a range of skills and ideas to provide advice on the best projects that will lead to even better freshwater and saltwater fisheries in Victoria.”

The advisory committee will cover coastal, estuarine, freshwater native fish and salmonid recreational fisheries from across the state including from the South West region.

Members are appointed by the Minister for Responsible Fisheries, who the advisory committee will provide advice to.

Fishing license fees help improve recreational fishing in Victoria, funding fish stocking, increased enforcement, better fishing access and healthier water ways.

Nominations close on Thursday, August 22.
