Holmes leads Venom honours as club celebrates season
THE dominant season of US import Mackenzie Holmes has been further recognised at the Geelong Venom club awards night, with the star being named Most Valuable Player for season 2025/26.
Last night (Wednesday, February 11), the Venom celebrated a resilient year that saw them finish sixth on the ladder despite an injury-ravaged campaign.
It was no surprise when Holmes was announced as MVP, with the versatile forward enjoying a consistent debut WNBL season that saw her average 21.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.
Holmes also finished fourth in league MVP voting and earned selection in the All-WNBL First Team – the first Venom player to do so.
Co-captain Jaz Shelley took out the Defensive Player of the Year award, recognising her tough and persistent defensive work across the season. Shelley was a finalist for the league’s same award.
Fellow co-captain Alex Sharp was named the Player’s Player award winner, which was voted on by her teammates and recognises her leadership and respect within the group.
Young gun Lily Rotunno received the Coach’s Award after an impressive campaign that earned her a nomination for the WNBL Breakout Player of the Year.
Taylor Mole took out the Community Impact Award, thanks to her exceptional contributions to the Geelong community and embodiment of the club’s values.
Mole was also a finalist for the same award at league level.
Outgoing head coach Chris Lucas was also celebrated for his contributions to the club, after he announced he will step aside from the job next season.
Geelong United chief executive officer Mark Neeld congratulated all award winners and said he is looking forward to growing further in years to come.
“What has stood out most is a growing dedication to the Geelong community.
“Many of our players are beginning to immerse themselves not just on game day but out in the wider community, embracing the responsibility of connecting with the next generation and representing Geelong with pride.”
The focus now turns to the NBL1 season, which will start in late March.
