Hundreds set to hit the sand for 40th Sheepwash Classic

April 17, 2019 BY

The Sheepwash Classic started 40 years ago and continues to attract 650 runners/walkers.

THE Sheepwash Classic will celebrate 40 years this weekend when hundreds of locals hit the sand for Barwon Heads Primary School’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

A group of parents from the school started the fun run four decades ago, and unbelievably, in a town of 1,500 people, 418 people participated in the first event.

Coordinator Sarah Jackson said the fun run became an off-road event eight years ago, when a new, spectacular course was developed.

“We may be biased but don’t think there is another fun run with a setting as stunning as ours,” Ms Jackson said.

“Each year during set up we have to pause to watch the amazing sunrise – it never gets old.”

Ms Jackson said the 40th Sheepwash Classic fun run would be held on Easter Saturday April 20 at 8am, and would feature an 8km run and 4km run/walk.

She said the event catered to most people, and that she saw people return year after year, as well alongside first-timers.

“The event has been a major fundraiser for the school and has contributed towards new playgrounds, air conditioning for the classrooms, new readers and landscaping,” she said.

“We rely on volunteers to make the day work and have people return to help even when they no longer have a child at the school.”
