WINDY and wild conditions didn’t hinder fundraising efforts at the inaugural Wombat Walk last Sunday (November 17).

The event was organised by Bellarine charity Wombat’s Wish, in honour of International Child Grief Awareness Month in November.

Taking place at the Portarlington Cricket Club around 350 people gathered, walking laps around the oval, creating awareness for Wombat’s Wish and raising funds for the organisation.

It’s estimated the event has raised more than $20,000 for the organisation, allowing them to continue their grief support work within the community.

Those who headed along to the walk were also treated to market stalls.’

Wombat’s Wish community and engagement officer Suzy Coad said everybody at the event spent up big and the money will go towards running more grief programs.

“We can provide more support in our counselling area and we can help out on family days.

“We’ve got a Christmas family day coming up on December 8…we buy presents and that kind of thing. It will all help, every service that we provide, so that’s fantastic.”

Despite strong winds forcing the event to move inside for the silent auctions, raffles and mystery bags, people remained dedicated to the event and continued to donate.

The Wombat’s Wish Mascot, Freeman, was ready to greet event goers.

Ms Coad said one of the highlights throughout the day was how people came together and kept their spirits high, making the best of the conditions.

“It was really nice just to see the Wombat’s team and all the volunteers and supporters band together and help all the market stalls out and everything like that,” Ms Coad said.

Along with the walk, event goers were also treated to live music, a mobile zoo, jumping castles and more.

Event organisers are planning for the walk to return next year, with the goal of raising even more money.

Ms Coad thanked all those who donated to the cause and those who supported the event.
