Innes takes out Carnival of Golf title after several attempts
MICK Innes struck out in style, winning the Carnival of Golf Bendigo Bank 36 Hole Event on Saturday, with a gallant score of 153 off the stick.
Innes blitzed the course on the first 18 with a score of 74 and followed through with 79 on his second trip around.
Innes, from Buninyong, with a plus one handicap, has had several attempts at winning the Championship and was glad to finally take out the title.
He was also happy to take the crown from last year’s victor Matt Ryan, also from the Ballarat region, who put in an impressive score this year with a solid 156.
Second placegetter was Jason Johnson – former Essendon great, who went around in a notable 154, showing he has got what it takes with his footy studs off and golfing spikes on. Portarlington locals Phillip Toyne and Gavin Whyley were first and second respectively in the nett event, with Toyne getting over the line with 149 off a count back.
Young Portarlington hopeful Max Edmanson was amongst the leaderboard after the first 18, with an outstanding 75, before the cold and flu medicine wore off and he subsequently lost his lolly.
The course was presented in immaculate condition by Course Superintendent Steve Burchett for the 36 Hole Championship event, which is possibly why the event fills so rapidly every year with the best golfers in the region vying for the title.
Sunday’s Portarlington Post Office’s Mixed fourball event saw 104 players grace the course, with Sue and Craig Plummer from Portarlington come out on top with an impressive 46.
The Carnival of Golf continues to welcome around 1000 golfers for the week to Portarlington from across Australia.
The Carnival finishes tomorrow with the Bellarine Times 2 Person Ambrose event.
