TARRA Queenscliff’s Michael Jacques has been named regional Victoria’s chef of the year at the 2025 Golden Plate Awards, leading a strong showing from Bellarine venues across multiple categories.

Jacques secured the title following the program’s annual mystery box cook-off in Melbourne, which saw eight chefs prepare a two-course meal assessed on presentation, flavour balance and technical skill.

The judging panel praised Jacques “deep respect” for the local produce and his ability to combine classic techniques with modern elements.

“He has a strong ability to balance classic techniques with modern creativity resulting is a very sophisticated offering,” the panel stated.

“The flavour combinations were on point, resulting in two winning dishes.”

Several other Bellarine operators were also recognised at this year’s awards.

The French-inspired Claribeax, located at the Curlewis Golf Club, won the relaxed dining award, with Tarra Queenscliff highly commended in the same category.

Hounds of the Vine took home awards for best cellar door and ambience, while The Q Train collected awards for best customer service and best menu of local food, and was highly commended in the best drinks list category.

Golden Plate Awards director Pamela Jewson said the 2025 season reflected the “remarkable level of creativity, resilience and innovation” of the state’s hospitality sector.

“The Greater Geelong dining scene has never been stronger,” she said. “This year’s finalists demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to quality – from the paddock to the plate, from warm service to world-class food.

“Customer service would be the outstanding factor that puts this region streaks ahead and, I believe, is on par with Melbourne’s finest.

“We have a huge talent pool of great chefs and the exciting take from this year is the incredible talent showcased by our young apprentices, highlighting that the future of hospitality can only keep getting more robust.”

Now in its 23rd year, the Golden Plate Awards champion excellence in dining, service, local produce and hospitality professionalism, and aim to spotlight the achievements of those operating across the diverse culinary landscape.

“A Golden Plate can elevate reputation, build customer confidence, and strengthen brand credibility in an increasingly competitive market,” Jewson said.

“For chefs, producers, venues and suppliers, the awards validate hard work and creativity while offering marketing and networking opportunities that can open new doors.”
