Junior cricketers join pros for Boxing Day test
ASPIRING junior cricketers from Barwon Heads Cricket Club (BHCC) showcased their skills in front of a crowd of more than 74,000 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day.
The kids took to the ground during the lunch break on day one of the third test between Australia and India.
On arguably the biggest day of the Australian sporting calendar, the eight boys showed off the skills they had developed learning cricket through the BHCC Woolworths Junior Blasters program.
Each cricketer rotated through three drills, focusing on the fundamentals of cricket; batting bowling and fielding.
“To be part of the Boxing Day Test was such a special experience for the boys,” club president Paul Summers said.
“I’m sure they’ll remember it for the rest of their lives.”
Tailored to develop fundamental cricket skills, foster enjoyment and fun, the Woolworth’s Junior Blasters program is specifically developed for girls and boys 5-7 years of age.
Barwon Heads Cricket Club has 25 Junior Blasters who practice their cricket on Friday nights over the summer season.
Junior Blasters provides a pathway for young cricketers through to underage and senior cricket.
Barwon Heads sits third in the BPCA A1 division and will host the semi-finals and grand finals of the BPCA 20/20 competition on Monday January 28, as part of the Australia Day long weekend.
