EACH Australia Day, the Lions Club of Ocean Grove Barwon Heads help local kids make their own kites to set off at Ocean Grove’s main beach. The Australia Day Kite Project has become a family ritual for local families as well as visitors on holidays since it was first established 18 years ago by Colin Lownes and his wife Lesley. This year’s event saw about 140 kites take the sky, with music from international musicians Karen and Joe on the steelpan drums. The kites are provided free while donations and profits from the barbecue are used to meet the costs of consumables on the day.
