Lake clean-up proves a success

March 27, 2019 BY

ST LEONARDS locals hope the attention from a successful clean-up at their lake at the weekend will draw in some love and attention from the council that their town deserves.

Armed in gloves and gumboots, young and old headed down to St Leonards Lake on Sunday to collect two trailer loads of rubbish.

The clean-up followed the efforts of St Leonards’ David Sich and his family, who took the lake the weekend before.

With the lake at its lowest in a long time, volunteers found a chair, car parts, bits of a bike, tiles, bricks, timber, tyres, plastics, a door frame, and general rubbish.

Mr Sich said he was proud that the community had come together to make the cleanup a success.

“I applaud all the youngsters for helping out today, they seemed to have had a lot of fun and hope they took something out of it!

“Also, to the cub scouts and their leader that came out to help – thank you.”

Mr Sich said he hoped the spotlight on St Leonards would draw in the love and attention his town deserved.

“Let’s win another Tidy Town Award… the last one was from decades ago. “To the Geelong City council, this is simply a sign from the St Leonards people that we are not happy being left in the corner – spread the love and funds, and jump on board.

“The lake is screaming for attention.” The clean-up concluded with a sausage sizzle for the hungry volunteers.
