Leading psychologist to train locals in mental health first aid
BELLARINE residents wanting to support friends, family and colleagues experiencing a mental illness can now become equipped with the skills to do so.
Leading psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is delivering a two-day course later this month in Ocean Grove and Queenscliff.
“One in five Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year.
“It’s important that we remove the stigma around mental health and provide support where we can.
“This course will give people the knowledge and confidence to do that.”
He said classes were kept small and interactive so participants could learn the skills and strategies required to cope with a person having a panic attack, a depressive episode, suicidal thoughts or someone dealing with drug addiction.
“I think it’s important that mental health be thought of the same as physical health, and training people in first aid is a great step towards this.”
Mental Health First Aid training will take place in Ocean Grove at the Neighbourhood Centre, on November 29 and November 30, and in Queenscliff on December 5 and Friday December 6.
Tickets cost $250 and are available via eventbrite.com – search “Standard Mental Health First Aid course”.
