THE Excellence in Family Day Care Awards has recognised a Leopold educator for their devotion, commitment and excellence in the industry.
Denene Nowell, who is registered with the City of Greater Geelong Family Day Care Service, is the recipient of the Geelong and Great Ocean Road Region Educator Award.
The annual awards celebrate the vital role family day carers play and their unique benefits, combining small business ownership with a dedication to supporting children’s learning.
For the past 21 years, Ms Nowell has been an educator, a career she pursued after having three children.
Ms Nowell, owner of Nene’s Family Day Care said it’s the children and family environment that she enjoys most about working in the industry.
“I’ve looked after children and then they’ll go away for a couple of years and then I’ll get their siblings in, it’s that family that follows on.”
Nominated for the award by parents who have used her service, Ms Nowell said win has been humbling, with many people reaching out to congratulate her.
“I think it opens the eyes. Everyone talks about long day care, but not a lot of people know about family day cares.
“I’ve had a few ups and downs over the last few weeks and then when this kind of thing happens, it’s like people do appreciate me.”
Family Day Care Australia chief executive officer Andrew Paterson said educators like Ms Nowell demonstrate a level of dedication and care.
“Her commitment to providing a nurturing and enriching early learning environment reflects the best of what family day care has to offer.”
Almost 5,000 nominations were received as part of this year’s awards.
Family Day Care Australia will announce the Educator of the Year winner on October 25.
