A LEOPOLD mother and son’s year-long journey to the 2023 World Obstacle Sports Expo (WOSE) in Florida will come to an end in just over a fortnight when both compete in the international event.

Mother of two and professional dog groomer Michelle Callanan and 13-year-old son Jett head to the Orange County Convention Centre in Orlando from July 26 to 30 for the Expo.

Raising over $2,000 through cupcake stalls, selling socks, garage sales and community events, Ms Callanan says that she and her son can fully look forward to the WOSE.

“We didn’t realise it was so expensive to head over there at first, paying for photos, food, entry fees and a whole bunch of other stuff, but now that’s all done, Jett and I can finally get fully excited for the event,” Ms Callanan said.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and we can’t wait to compete against some of the best ninja athletes in the world.”

WOSE is an inaugural event that will bring together all the major ninja athletics events and organisations under one banner.

It will host the Ninja World Cup, the World Ninja Athlete Games Championships, the UNAA World Series Finals, the FINA World Finals, and the Ultimate OCR 3km Championships.

Ms Callanan will compete in each competition over five jam-packed days, while Jett will take part in the UNAA, World Cup, and FINA events.

Both Michelle and Jett train out of Geelong Ninjas and Essendon-based gym Fighting Lyons.

Ms Callanan says the ninja community has played a huge role supporting her and her son improve their ninja skills and hosting family events to raise funds.

“Geelong Ninjas has been so supportive in the lead-up to our departure, setting up a huge family night with all proceeds going towards Jett and I, as well as a few other local ninjas as well,” Ms Callanan said.

“The ninja community is one that sticks together through thick and thin, and we know they’ll be with us the whole way.”
