PORTARLINGTON Football and Netball Club and Portarlington Cricket Club will boast upgraded sports lighting and perimeter fencing around the main oval, thanks to $250,000 from the federal Government.

Liberal member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said the major investment was budgeted funding for the next stage in the Portarlington community’s vision for a recreation precinct, which brings together local sporting groups, including the football, netball, cricket, tennis and pony clubs, and the agricultural society.

The $250,000 is provided under the Morrison Government’s Community Development Program.

“I congratulate the local sporting clubs for working together on its proposal which will benefit approximately 7,000 people in Portarlington, Indented Heads, St Leonards and surrounding areas,” Ms Henderson said.

“The Bellarine is a critical growth area and I am pleased to be delivering this funding.

“The Morrison Government invests in regional Australia because thriving communities are vital to our nation’s future.”

Ms Henderson said whether it was delivering vital sports infrastructure, fixing local roads, including $5 million to upgrade Murradoc Road, funding new facilities at Portarlington Golf Club or fighting for a new pool for the north Bellarine, she was extremely proud to be standing up and delivering for Portarlington.

Ms Henderson’s announcement comes after candidate for Corangamite Libby Coker last month pledged $455,000 to install new lights at Portarlington Recreation Reserve, if her government won this coming federal election.

Ms Coker said the funding would help upgrade the club’s lighting systems at the number one and number two ovals, and also facilitate construction of energy efficient clubrooms that would improve the fiscal standing of the club.
