Fraser, 4, joined dad Shane as they flew their kite before an excitable Fraser took out several other kites to fly along the foreshore.

THE sun was shining, barbecue sizzling and just enough wind to make theLions Club of Ocean Grove Barwon Heads’ free kite flying day a success on Sunday.

The club has been running the family friendly Australia Day event for the past decade, attracting young and old as they enjoyed perfect kite flying conditions.

Lions Club of Ocean Grove Barwon Heads president Cynthia Euson, surrounded by fellow Lions, enjoyed another successful kite flying day down Ocean Grove beach for Australia Day.

“We just had a couple of the kids do prototypes and now we’ve got the kite design down pat; we’ve been running this event for over ten years, a lot of locals and visitors know we are here,” club president Cynthia Euson said.

“We have a preparation day prior to this where we cut up all the bits and pieces – the strings and the tails and the bridles. It’s all free for the kids to come along and make the kites.

“They fly them down on the beach and then we have a sausage sizzle going as well.”

Ms Euson said the day was always a wonderful way to celebrate being an Australian.

“It brings families together. We start at 9.30am and run until lunchtime. Everyone knows we are here so we’re always flat chat. Once all the kids have their kites going, it’s just lovely.”
