THE Lions Club of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads (OGBH) is on the hunt for old laptop computers to be refurbished and donated to local secondary school students.

The Bellarine-based Lions Club has joined the Laptops for Lions initiative, initially started by the Lions Club of Portland, following the club’s most recent meeting to assist families that have fallen on hard times.

Lions V2 zone co-ordinator and former OGBH Lions president Grant Hull said now was the perfect time to donate an old or unused laptop (no older than 10 years).

“As Term 1 gets under way, a lot of schools across the region have a requirement that students have a particular laptop, but students that don’t currently have a laptop, probably aren’t able to afford one,” Mr Hull said.

“That’s where we are able to help.

“Laptops that are sent to us for refurbishment can then be distributed to our local secondary schools, where students in-need get the opportunity to complete their school tasks and continue to learn without paying a cent.”

The refurbishment process involves the OGBH Lions Club delivering donated laptops to a Portland-based computer technician, who has chosen to remain unnamed, and will clear the computers and reload them ready for use.

From there, the laptops are picked up and delivered to students across the Bellarine.

The OGBH Lions will donate to schools including Bellarine Secondary College’s Ocean Grove campus for Year 7 and 8 students.
