Local club scores at state awards
A LOCAL sporting club is rolling on strong after taking out two honours at the 2024 Community Clubs Victoria Gala Night.
Ocean Grove Bowling Club was awarded with the Best Sustainability Initiative Award, and young member Elle Boyd was crowned the Victoria’s Emerging Young Community Leader.
The CCV Awards annually recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of more than 1,000 licenced clubs in the industry.
The bowls club’s first sustainability award acknowledged its dedication to environmental stewardship and mitigating climate change.
During the past 18 months, OGBC has installed 219 solar panels on its roof which has helped generate over 85kW of clean energy.
The club is now on the way to being zero-carbon through its Sustainability Plan.
Ocean Grove Bowling Club chief executive officer Nathan O’Neill said he was thrilled the solar initiative had won the club an award.
“Through the utilisation of renewable energy, we are lessening our reliance on the carbon-intensive electricity grid, therefore contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
“Our aim to partner with like-minded organisations and drive positive change within our community.
“At the heart of our sustainability initiative is the aspiration to lead by example and inspire others to join us on this journey.
“Our Solar Project, in conjunction with our long-term sustainability goals and community engagement efforts, serves as a testament to our dedication to creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
Local youngster Elle Boyd was recognised at the awards for her ongoing determination, hard work and motivation towards the growth and betterment of the club.
Since joining OGBC over a year ago through a partnership with disability provider genU, Elle has shown an uncompromising commitment in the face of adversity.
“There is no one with greater resilience or determination than Elle,” Mr O’Neill said.
“Over the past year, her role in the member experience team at the Ocean Grove Bowling Club has demonstrated her infectious enthusiasm, which has positively impacted both our team and our members.”
Elle has been using her spare time outside of the club to volunteer at the Salvation Army Op Shop Ocean Grove and the Bellarine Outreach Van.
“Her transition to working at the club highlights her perseverance and value. Elle’s impact on the community is profound, promoting inclusivity and belonging, making her an exceptional recipient for this award.
“We thank genU greatly for enabling Elle to be an invaluable team member at OGBC.”
