Local Steiner school putting on a big fair

Freshwater Creek Steiner School is gearing up to host its annual Spring Fair and Open Day this month.

The fair is a fun, family-friendly day out featuring Pixies Playground – an area for pre-schoolers with its own petting zoo, a story tent reading by beloved Victorian author Alison Lester, an artisan marketplace, silent auction and entertainment from local and school musicians.

Families are encouraged to build their own billy cart to race in the third consecutive Billy Cart Challenge. Entry is open to all ages (see the calendar page on the school’s website fwcss.vic.edu.au for details on rules and how to enter).

The Spring Fair and Open Day is the community’s opportunity to see first-hand the beautiful, rural school grounds of Freshwater Creek Steiner School.

This year, the school is celebrating the centenary of Steiner education. From the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart in 1919, there are now 1,182 Waldorf and Rudolf Steiner schools in 66 countries. Fifty Australian Steiner schools are part of this vibrant, innovative and diverse global community.

“Now, more than ever before, Steiner education is recognised as a highly valued approach to develop flexible and agile thinking and an ability to collaborate and thrive in a 21st Century world,” Steiner Education Australia chief executive officer Virginia Moller said.

At the Spring Fair, patrons can learn about the challenging curriculum offered by the school during an inspired presentation by the Head of School, Gabby Brennan.

Guests will also have the chance to talk to class teachers who will be on hand to answer questions about the Steiner style of education.

In a bid to achieve zero waste at the event, organisers are encouraging all visitors to plan ahead of time and bring their own keep cup, refillable water bottle (fresh drinking water will be provided by Barwon Water) and shopping bags.

An eclectic and delicious range of food from perennial favourites Sidewalk Cantina, Taste of Tibet and the Dolly Bus will keep hungry punters satisfied, while homemade cakes and chai will be on offer at the Chai Café.

Pack a picnic basket with plates and cutlery and make use of the wash station. This year’s Spring Fair and Open Day will take place on October 26 from 10am-3pm.
