A GROUP of like-minded local car enthusiasts turned Wallington’s Flying Brick Cider into a makeshift car exhibition last Thursday (August 31), celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the car make they all love.

Popular car company MG officially celebrated 100 years this year following the first production of MG cars in 1923.

MG Car Club Geelong joined hundreds of clubs around the world to celebrate the centenary occasion, displaying an array of 24 MG models on Flying Brick Cider’s lawn.

Club committee member, Leopold resident and car club member of 40 years Peter Yorke said it was a fantastic occasion seeing so much history in one place.

“One of the common denominators in the club is fellowship, we all own an MG which is another, and as I said to the members today, if you own an MG you are part of a community,” Mr Yorke said.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re based in South America or Europe, people can head to the MG Car Club website, and they will be set for life with whatever club is available nearby.

“MG is not just a vehicle, it’s an emotional attachment that includes history worthy of the car itself.”

The first recorded sale of an MG car was in August 1923 when a MG Cowley was sold to a member of the public.

Last Wednesday’s celebrations also acknowledged the 50-year anniversary of the MG Car Club Geelong.
