THE City of Greater Geelong has adopted a future management strategy for Ocean Grove’s Blue Waters Lake Reserve.

Councillors voted to accept a masterplan for the reserve at last month’s meeting, which intends to enhance the natural values of the local lake.

The wetland habitat plays an important role in drainage management in the Barwon Water catchment and provides space for passive recreation opportunities across its seven hectares.

The plan outlines improvements to be rolled out over coming years, such as upgrades to paths, tables and seats, interpretive signage, ongoing weed and revegation programs, including introduction of native trees staged removal of willows, and stormwater.

COGG had released a draft plan in May that drew 200 submissions, 90 per cent of which were in support.

Bellarine Ward councillor and environment portfolio chair Jim Mason said he was happy to accept the plan after its widespread community backing.

“There was overwhelming support to maintain and preserve the natural values of the reserve, address water quality issues and upgrade the surrounding path to allow access all-year round.”

“The plan will help us enhance the area’s environmental and recreational features, to make it an even better space for wildlife and visitors.”

Fellow Bellarine Ward councillor Stephanie Asher said the plan would also guide future decisions funding and timing of upgrades.

“Blue Waters Lake Reserve is essentially a very attractive drain, and it’s also become a unique wetland habitat in Old Ocean Grove and a very popular recreational area.

“As chair of council’s sustainability performance portfolio I fully endorse this multi-year plan to enhance the natural values of the lake area.

“The masterplan for Blue Waters Lake follows positive feedback from the community about its vision and aims. The plan will guide Council’s investment priorities and the staging of works at the reserve.”
