POINT Lonsdale Boardriders Club’s junior surfing program has made waves huge waves again in 2024, attracting more than 100 local children.

The second annual Lonnie Groms has been running on weekends over the past month at Point Lonsdale Front Beach.

The program also educates parents on water safety and wave awareness.

The program is tailored to children aged 6-12 years old and focuses on introducing surfing and water safety to participants and their parents.

Co-ordinator Drew Aras said this year’s Lonnie Groms had blown expectations completely out of the water.

“We capped it at 100 participants this year and it sold out super quickly.

“We’ve had the four sessions thus far and they’ve been fantastic.

“A year and a half ago we only had ten kids in our Under-12 junior age groups, and now it’s up to about 30. There’s this great new group of children getting amongst it.”

The Lonnie Groms program has been a huge success again in 2024.

Mr Aras said the strides children have made through the program have been inspirational.

“About 70 children who did it last year have come back and have shown big improvement.

“They’ve known the drills and we’ve gotten them out on the bigger waves too.

“The parents are also much more across it. It’s been super smooth.”

The final session of Lonnie Groms will be held this Sunday, December 15.
