Lonsdale’s Aussie Open Spectacular!
OKAY, it wasn’t Melbourne Park and no sign of Serena or Roger, but Point Lonsdale Tennis Club’s third annual “Fanatical Oz Open” was just as important to the good folk down there on the Bellarine Peninsula.
Hot weather did not deter those tennis nuts, who battled on for Open glory – Point Lonsdale style. And of course, dress code was strictly green and gold!
The morning session was for juniors and there were 16 youngsters battling it out for the major prize, while in the afternoon, 15 adults gave it their best shot and suffice to say, Serena and Roger need harbour few concerns of their exalted status!
Aussie fare was on the menu too, with vanilla slices, Vegemite sandwiches and lamingtons served, along with some VB and a few bottles of Jacobs Creek as well.
Val and Amanda took out the coveted senior division, while Ned was Fanatical Oz Junior Champ. Lonsdale has shown to be quite innovative in this type of thing, as Tennis In Geelong covered a “Retro Wimbledon” event a year or so back.
Great work, Lonsdalians – you certainly know how to throw a (tennis) party! See you at next year’s Open!
