Moving Mannerim service remembers the fallen

November 21, 2018 BY

Kate Lockhart from Bellarine Landcare Group, Colin Cairns from Queenscliff RSL, Maggie Stowers from Queenscliffe Historical Museum, and City of Greater Geelong councillor Jim Mason.

ABOUT 120 people participated in a moving Remembrance Day Service at the Mannerim Memorial Indigenous Garden.

Dressed in a World War I nurses uniform, Maggie Stowers, from the Queenscliffe Historical Museum, spoke about the life of Bertie Devlin, a young soldier who’s grave she had visited in France, and whose name is recorded on the Mannerim honour role.

Local musicians “Big Love” were accompanied by Janama Cussens on didgeridoo playing “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”.

Bellarine Landcare is calling for anyone who wishes to contribute their historical anecdotes concerning the memorial site or life of the Mannerim District, to get in touch.

Stories will be recorded on a website, and accessed at the memorial through QR patches.
