MP’s petition for Tivoli Drive upgrades

December 10, 2020 BY

Federal MP Libby Coker collected signatures at the Curlewis shopping centre.

FEDERAL MP Libby Coker is calling for the community to sign her petition in the hopes of securing upgrades to Tivoli Drive in Curlewis ahead of schedule.

Ms Coker took to the Curlewis shopping centre during the last weekend of November, urging locals to show their support as she continues to push for Council’s response.

The petition received upwards of 70 signatures as Ms Coker approached locals at the centre, taking the total to more than 200 people in favour of the urgent upgrades.

This month works will begin to improve the safety of the road, with speed humps being built and the reducing of the speed limit to 50 km/h.

Ms Coker believes not enough is being done, with the expectation that the upgrades promised to residents will not be seen for up to five years under the completion of stage two developments.

Tivoli Drive was designated to be the ‘gateway’ to the community but has not delivered in its promises, Ms Coker claims.

“This is a long straight undulating road with several blind spots and large trucks travelling up and down to get to new developments.

“It is noisy, it is dangerous, and something needs to be done now,” she said.

The petition comes as Ms Coker’s latest attempt to urge Council to listen to distressed residents who say the road has become a “nightmare”.

Service director Guy Wilson-Browne said the City continues to work closely with residents in addressing their concerns for Tivoli Drive.

“Community safety is our number one priority, and we have responded swiftly to residents’ requests to implement traffic calming measures on this road,” he said.

Ms Coker and the City of Greater Geelong as well as other key stakeholders are currently in discussions about the upgrades, with the demand for action growing.
