New boating safety camera installed at the Port of Barwon Heads
A new boating safety camera has been set up at the Main Jetty in Barwon Heads to provide real-time information for the local boating community.
The camera delivers current images of swell and wind conditions at the Barwon River entry and coastal river bar, known for their unpredictable and hazardous nature.
The feed, updated every five minutes, is available online and through the Boating Vic website and the ‘Boating VIC’ App, helping skippers make informed decisions before setting out.
Barwon Coast chief executive Gareth Smith said the camera was ready just in time for the busy boating season.
“This camera is a game changer and we’re thrilled to have it operational in time for the busy boating season,” Mr Smith said.
“It provides vital, real-time information about often rapidly changing conditions.”
“Its primary purpose is to allow boaters to make well-informed decisions before heading out.”
“We’re committed to enhancing safety on our waterways, and this technology is a significant step forward.”
The coastal river bar, where sheltered waters meet ocean swells, can change without warning.
In February, one man drowned and another was rescued when their boat capsized due to large swell near the Barwon Heads river mouth.
The survivor was rescued by jetskiers who found him clinging to the hull while being swept out to sea.
