BARWON Coast have installed 60 new emergency markers along the coastal reserve from Collendina to Breamlea.

The updated markers are now green and can help pinpoint exact locations during emergencies in open spaces using a unique code.

The code is linked to Triple Zero’s Computer Aided Dispatch system and can provide information including location, GPS coordinates, road access routes and navigational data.

“The state-wide change that is occurring from the well-known yellow beach location signs to these new emergency markers is about more than just different colours,” Barwon Coast chief executive officer Gareth Smith said.

“It’s about aligning our coastline with the Victorian Government’s Triple Zero dispatch system.

“The markers provide a direct link to Triple Zero, which will assist in emergency responses.”

The updated emergency markers replace the yellow beach location signs which were not integrated with the triple zero system.

Barwon Coast acknowledges the history of the previous signs; however safety remains paramount, with the new markers saving time in locating people and dispatching emergency services.

During emergencies, callers will need to quote the reference number on the green sign to Triple Zero, if there is no green marker visible, a description of the location should be given as clearly as possible.

The implementation of the markers is being delivered in stages, with stage one now complete, stage two will expand the coverage in the coming months.

“We’re not stopping here though-we’re now planning stage two, which aims to strengthen safety across our oceanfront areas,” Mr Smith said.

A map of the updated markers is available from emergencymarkers.com.au and shows the signage in place around Victoria.
