THIS year’s aerial firefighting fleet has been unveiled at Avalon Airport, as Victoria prepares for another high-risk fire season.

The 54-strong fleet includes two new fixed-wing aircraft fitted with infrared technology capable of capturing higher-quality images to support fire crews on the ground.

Two large air tankers will again be based at Avalon, and more than 100 additional aircraft – including Black Hawk helicopters – are available on a call-when-needed basis.

Victoria can also draw on aircraft from the National Fleet if required.

Emergency Management Commissioner Tim Wiebusch said the aircraft would provide vital support for communities in the months ahead.

“Our emergency services will continue to do everything they can to support our communities, but it’s important to have a fire plan and listen to warnings and advice,” he said.

“If you haven’t downloaded or practiced using the VicEmergency app, now is the time to do so.”

The latest Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook indicates south-west and western Victoria face elevated fire risk due to prolonged dry conditions.

Minister for Emergency Services Vicki Ward said readiness remained the top priority as conditions dry out.

“In the sky and on the ground – our fire crews are ready for whatever this season throws at them,” she said.

“Fire preparedness is a shared responsibility – we need all Victorians to get ready and stay informed so everyone can enjoy summer safely.”

Aircraft can be redeployed anywhere in the state in response to changing conditions and have already attended several incidents since the fleet’s service period began in October — a month earlier than usual due to increased risk.

Victorians are urged to ensure they have a fire plan for their home and for any travel over summer.
