THE City of Greater Geelong has endorsed the Laneways Action Plan for implementation by the Revitalising Central Geelong Partnership.

The action plan identifies new laneways connections that will increase pedestrian access throughout central Geelong.

Possible new public laneways and links identified include Dennys Place to Malop Street, Ryrie Street to Market Street, Market Street to Little Myers Street and Aitchison Place laneway.

A number of privately owned laneways were also identified as guidance for landowners to consider when upgrading existing buildings or redeveloping properties.

These included Wright Place links, Market Square Shopping Centre links and Westfield Shopping Centre links.

Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood said that the Laneways Action Plan would have a significant impact on the usability and amenity of the Geelong CBD.

“By creating additional laneways, it will be easier and quicker for people walking from one side of the city to the other, it will increase safety by increasing the number of visible doorways and windows along a laneway and it will also provide more attractive and vibrant spaces for the community to enjoy.”

Tourism and Events portfolio chair Cr Ron Nelson said Geelong’s laneways were a great attraction in Geelong.

“The action plan ensures we can make the most of these laneway connections and drive increased economic benefits and jobs to the CBD.

“Establishing laneways connections will support future growth of Geelong’s CBD and provide bette integration for people who live, work, study and visit central Geelong
