New Probus club headed for Point Lonsdale
A PROBUS Club could be opening soon in Point Lonsdale, with the initial meeting being held on Thursday, March 7.
Probus memberships are open to those who are retied or semi-retired and offer a range of activities, depending on the interests of each individual club.
Chairman of Probus South Pacific, Michael Ransom, said Probus kept people engaged and in touch with the people in their local community.
“There’s a lot of people who are retired, or semi-retired, and we think that a Probus Club can offer those people a good opportunity to come together and enjoy life.
“When you’re working you have your life, your work colleagues, you know them well, but when you retire you lose that sort of thing.
Mr Ransom said Probus had access to the Census figures and knew there were many people in the Point Lonsdale area who were retired or semi-retired, and it was time to see if there was interest in starting a club.
Probus operates in towns across Australia and New Zealand and has done so for about 50 years.
The club was originally started by Rotary as a way to help people who have finished working.
“People have a little bit of adjustment when they retire and what probate does is offer a vehicle for them to retire, come together, get to know other people in their own little district and do things together,” Mr Ransom said.
“In my mind, a Probus Club is as important as the local footy club, they get people together and Probus Clubs performs much the same sort of role, but for a different age group.”
Yesterday’s meeting was expected to elect a president, secretary, and treasurer for the club, with those people to begin to develop their programs.
