New speed limit for busy Bellarine route

July 10, 2019 BY

THE state government is boosting safety for drivers and cyclists on a busy Bellarine road after strong community feedback and expert advice.

An 80kmh speed limit has been introduced on Portarlington-Queenscliff Road between Murradoc Road and Yarram Creek Lane, following community feedback and a comprehensive speed limit review by Regional Roads Victoria (RRV).

There has been a history of crashes on this busy route including three people who have tragically lost their lives and six serious injury collisions in the five years to February 2019.

“We’ve listened to the community and the advice of experts – that’s why we’ve taken action to improve safety for road user and cyclists on Portarlington-Queenscliff Road,” Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said.

“With a horrific history of crashes and broad community support, changes like this just make sense.”

A popular route for cyclists, Portarlington- Queenscliff Road has been listed as one of Bike Safe Geelong’s top 10 “hazardous” roads within the region, with local police also requesting a review of the speed limit.

At a community session held last year, there was also support for a lower and consistent speed limit along this road, particularly along the southern section.

New signage has been rolled out along this 9.5-kilometre stretch of road and the new limit is now in effect.
