A NEW rehabilitation and fitness centre in North Geelong has merged medical treatment and state-of-the-art sport facilities in one location.

Geelong Sports Medicine Centre (GSMC) is bringing together healthcare and fitness facilities with a commercial size gymnasium, clinical Pilates and movement studio, hydro pool and more, all alongside Allied healthcare practitioner consulting rooms.

The facility was dreamed-up and founded by couple Emma and Nick Jamar.

Mrs Jamar said GSMC focuses on holistic rehabilitation and provides the general public with facilities usually only available to elite athletes.

GSMC is designed to be all-inclusive, with state-of-the-art sport facilities in one location, including a hydrotherapy and spa.

“You look at someone like an AFL footballer … they’ve got a team of health professionals and the facilities. They have hydro spas and ice baths, and hydro pools and testing equipment … a dietician who helps them with their food, and someone who does pre-season testing and helps them with their fitness,” she said.

“Nick just kept saying ‘why isn’t that available for just the general person to be able to come in and access?’.”

The GSMC motto is ‘everyone’s health matters’.

“And by that we mean everyone should have access to a facility like this. Just because you’re not an elite sportsperson doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to have access to this,” Mrs Jarman said.

She said Nick, who has been a physiotherapist in Geelong for 20 years, also saw the need for medical practitioners to communicate and coordinate patient rehabilitation.

“He found lot of people would come and see him and then he would send them off to a gymnasium or somewhere else to work on their rehabilitation, and there was no one communication of managing the whole pathway,” Mrs Jarman said.

“Nick wanted to create a facility that was more of a pathway for their rehabilitation.”

With a team of physiotherapists, a dietician, podiatrist, an exercise physiologist and others all working onsite, GSMC is designed to be just that: an all-inclusive, lifestyle-focused rehabilitation and fitness centre that enables treating healthcare professionals to communicate smoothly to work together towards client rehabilitation.

“It’s called the fitness lab because it’s all science-based fitness, so there’s not fad diets, or six-minute abs, it’s about long-term health change, we’re all inclusive, all abilities, all shapes, all sizes.”

The gym at the centre is open to the general public, offering unique classes, with all trainers having a minimum of an exercise science degree.
The facility had its official launch breakfast on Friday, February 4, with many athletes and health professionals attending to celebrate the unique and innovative facility.
