PLAYERS will tee up for a good cause next month when Portarlington Golf Club hosts the 11th E.J. Whitten Foundation Charity Golf Day.

The event, which will be held on February 15, is expected to attract 120 local and corporate golfers, sportsmen and women to the beautiful Bellarine for a fun-filled day of golf and men’s health awareness.

Since 2009, the day initiated by Neil Petrie at Drysdale Carpet Court has raised $90,000, which has been used to support men’s health and well-being in Australian communities.

Founder and executive director of the E.J. Whitten Foundation Ted Whitten Jnr said every year the event was a fantastic day and very well supported.

As well as playing for a good cause, participants will enjoy breakfast prepared by the local Lions Club from 7am, 18 holes of golf on a beautiful golf course, and then a hot buffet lunch prior to entertainment and presentations.

Mr Whitten said in everything the foundation did, it aimed to build awareness of men’s health and inspire men to take charge of their own individual health by starting an annual health and prostate check-up with their local GP.

Foundation chief executive officer Nick Holland said funds raised from this year’s event would contribute to the foundation’s awareness programs, specifically aimed at the research and treatment of prostate cancer, a disease that kills 66 men a week in Australia.

The special guest speaker this year is Hawthorn premiership player Campbell Brown. He will talk about his football career and his recent marathon run in the Antarctic.

The major sponsor will once again be the Drain Man who has a solid presence in the Bellarine, partnering with the Portarlington Mussel Festival just recently along with AFL Barwon’s Rivalry Round Dinner with the Foundation in July.

The work of the E.J. Whitten Foundation in the community could not occur without the generous support from sponsors The Drain Man, PC Mobile Welding, Drysdale Carpet Court, Portarlington Beach Motel, Carlton and United Breweries and the Portarlington Golf Club.
