NOMINATIONS are now open for the Surf Coast Shire’s Australia Day Community Awards.

On behalf of the National Australia Day Council, the shire gives out awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and Community Event of the Year.

Surf Coast Shire mayor Rose Hodge said the awards provided a great opportunity to acknowledge those who serve their community.

“This is your chance to pay tribute to the volunteers, role models and inclusive events that make our communities and organisations so special.

“Their day-in, day-out contributions can too often go unsung, and just nominating someone is a great recognition.”

People under 27 years old are eligible for the Young Citizen of the Year Award, while Community Event of the Year goes to an individual, organisation or community group that has staged a noteworthy event during 2019.

Cr Hodge encouraged people to nominate those they felt were worthy.

“Presentation of our Australia Day Awards on behalf of the National Australia Day Council is always a highlight. Let’s make this a year of record nominations and make it really tough for our judging panel.”

Voting is open until November 12.
